The mission of Lloyd Learning Inc. is to provide STEM project-based learning opportunities in an informal learning environment at low or no-cost to underrepresented female students, and to create a supportive culture of curiosity and success through the Starfish STEM Academy partnerships with Countryside High School and surrounding middle schools, St. Petersburg College, and the Pinellas County community.
The vision for the Starfish STEM Academy is to prepare underrepresented middle school female students for their future in STEM careers, while using the construct of project-based learning in a student-centered environment. We believe students should be challenged to solve real-world problems both within the community in which they live and globally.
The goals of Lloyd Learning are aligned with the U.S. Federal Government’s STEM Education 5-year Strategic Plan:
- Build Strong Foundations for STEM Literacy by ensuring that every American has the opportunity to master basic STEM concepts, including computational thinking, and to become digitally literate.
- Increase Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in STEM and provide all Americans with lifelong access to high-quality STEM education, especially those historically underserved and underrepresented in STEM fields and employment.
- Prepare the STEM Workforce for the Future—both college-educated STEM practitioners and those working in skilled trades that do not require a four-year degree—by creating authentic learning experiences that encourage and prepare learners to pursue STEM careers.
